Which services need an order, how to add one, and what it unlocks for charting.
Before you start
An order is a provider's sign-off for a patient to receive certain services, for a set number of visits within a date range. Adding orders needs a role that can manage orders, such as a nurse practitioner or medical director.
Step 1: See who needs one
In Appointments, the Orders column shows Needed when a visit requires an order and none covers it, and a check (Approved) when one does. It's blank for services that don't need orders. The appointment itself shows Order needed or Order approved.
Step 2: Add an order
- Open the appointment and select Chart Notes (or open the patient's profile).
- Under Orders on the Patient tab, select Add order.
- Enter # Refills: how many visits it covers.
- Check the Start Date and Exp. Date (one year by default).
- Choose the services it covers and add any Notes.
- Select Create. You're recorded as the ordering provider.
Step 3: What it unlocks
- Each matching visit within the date range uses one refill. The Orders table shows how many have been filled.
- With an order on file, the provider on the visit can chart the intervention (see Assessments).
Step 4: Choose which services need one
- In Procedures, open the service and select the pencil.
- Turn Orders Required off for services that don't need an order. It's on by default.
Tips
- Booking isn't blocked without an order. The visit shows Order needed until one is added.
- Using Orders-gated intake? Patients with a current order skip the automatic intake form.
